Truemato is a tomato ketchup made from 75.75% real tomatoes rather than tomato paste, sweetened with misri (rock sugar) instead of refined sugar or syrup. Onion, ginger, garlic and whole spices give it a chutney-like depth, while organic vinegar and lemon juice supply the acidity that keeps it stable without an added preservative.

It carries no synthetic colour, no thickener and no stabiliser, so the body comes from reduced tomato and the texture can vary a little from batch to batch. Every ingredient carries an exact percentage, down to the 0.06% lemon extract.

Why We Like It

  • Three quarters of the bottle is whole tomato, and every ingredient carries an exact percentage down to the 0.06% lemon extract.
  • Misri instead of refined sugar, with total sugar at about 17 g per 100 g.
  • We like that the thickness comes from cooking the tomato down, not from starch or gum.
  • No synthetic colour, no preservative and no stabiliser.
  • A microbiology report is on file, which matters for a sauce with no preservative.
  • Glass bottle, not a squeezy plastic one.

Is It For You?

Good for

Households that want a real-tomato ketchup rather than one built from paste

Anyone avoiding synthetic colour, preservatives and thickeners

Kids' tiffins and everyday dipping, in moderation

Cooks who use ketchup as an ingredient in chutneys, sandwiches and marinades

Avoid if

Anyone looking for a zero-sugar condiment; this has about 14 g of added sugar per 100 g

Households that will not refrigerate after opening

Anyone expecting a perfectly uniform, glossy commodity texture

How to use
01

Dunk pakoras, samosas and cutlets straight from the bottle

02

Spread on sandwiches and rolls in place of a sugary sauce

03

Stir into a quick pav bhaji or pulao base for tomato depth

04

Mix with a little curd or mayonnaise for a dip

05

Brush over paneer or vegetables before grilling as a quick glaze

What to look for in Ketchup?
01

Whether the first ingredient is tomato or tomato paste. Paste is cheaper and needs water, sugar and starch to rebuild body.

02

Where sugar sits in the list and how many grams per 100 g. Sugar is often the second ingredient by weight.

03

A Class II preservative such as sodium benzoate (INS 211). It is legal, but a preservative-free bottle has to be refrigerated instead.

04

Synthetic colour or a thickener such as modified starch or xanthan gum. Real tomato needs neither.

05

A percentage breakdown against every ingredient. Very few brands print one.
