Why We Like It

  • Salem is the variety turmeric is named for, and this is sold as that rather than as generic haldi.
  • A one-ingredient label with nothing to decode.
  • Turmeric is among the most adulterated spices in India, so a named variety and a short list do real work here.
Ingredients

Turmeric (100%)

Single ingredient

Ground turmeric rhizome, with no filler, no anti-caking agent and no added colour. Salem is the variety.

No lead chromate

Not used

This is the one that matters. Lead chromate is used illegally to brighten dull turmeric and is the most serious documented adulterant in the spice.

No metanil yellow

Not used

The other banned dye used to lift turmeric's colour.

No starch or chalk filler

Not used

Turmeric powder is bulked out with rice flour, starch and chalk in the wider market.

Is It For You?

Good for

Everyday household cooking — curries, dals and sabzis

Turmeric milk, kadha and warm drinks

Marinades and homemade spice blends

Anyone who wants the variety named rather than just organic turmeric

Avoid if

Anyone expecting a uniform electric-yellow powder — undyed turmeric is duller and varies by batch

Cooks who want turmeric to add flavour rather than colour — it colours far more than it tastes

Blood-thinner users, who are usually told to keep turmeric to culinary amounts

What to look for in Turmeric Powder?
01

Buy whole where you can. Whole spice you can inspect; powder is easy to pad out with starch, husk or chalk.

02

Rub a pinch between wet palms. Colour that lifts onto skin means added dye. Metanil yellow, lead chromate and Sudan dyes are all documented in Indian spice.

03

A single-ingredient list is the whole point. Anti-caking agents and 'permitted colour' both signal processing you do not need.

04

Steam sterilisation is the clean way to reduce microbes. Irradiation and fumigation are not always declared.

05

Bright, uniform yellow is a warning in turmeric. Lead chromate is used to brighten cheap powder and is a serious contaminant.
