Assamé's Peach Lavender kombucha is a raw, unpasteurised fermented tea brewed from Assam tea leaves, in a 300 ml can. Assamé describes it as juicy peach with delicate lavender: "naturally smooth, lightly floral".

The recipe and the label panel are the same across all six Assamé flavours. The ingredient list reads: filtered water, kombucha culture, Assam tea leaves, sugar, natural flavouring substances and herb extracts. The peach and lavender come from those flavourings; no fruit is listed on the can.

Per 100 ml it carries 11 kcal and 2.5 g of added sugar, so about 33 kcal and 7.5 g of added sugar a can. There is trace caffeine from the tea. Keep refrigerated.

Why We Like It

  • Five ingredients on the can, and no artificial flavours, colours or preservatives.
  • Raw and unpasteurised, as the can says.
  • 11 kcal and 2.5 g added sugar per 100 ml, a much lighter drink than a flavoured soda.
  • Assamé pitches this one as the calm flavour: "calmness, canned".

What to look for in Kombucha?
01

Check whether it's raw and unpasteurised. Many brands heat-treat kombucha after fermenting.

02

Look at added sugar per 100 ml. Kombucha should read closer to tea than soda.

03

Scan the ingredient list for artificial flavours, colours or preservatives.

04

Check the fermentation time, since longer ferments generally mean fewer residual sugars.

05

Check for trace alcohol content if you're avoiding alcohol entirely, since fermentation can produce trace ethanol.
