Real butter and real flavourings. It is sugar, as fudge-toffee is.

Reviewed by PurePicked

Inippu Indulgence makes fudge-toffee by hand in Chennai, in small batches. What separates it from most commercial fudge is the fat: real butter and sweetened condensed milk, rather than vanaspati or hydrogenated vegetable oil. The flavour comes from real filter coffee, vanilla bean, cinnamon and Tuticorin sea salt, not from an essence.

It is sugar, which is what a fudge-toffee is. Sugar comes first, at about two thirds of the weight, and a 15 g piece is 70 calories. No preservatives and no synthetic colours. Contains milk.

Why We Like It

  • Thirteen ingredients, every one of them named.
  • Real butter and real condensed milk, not vanaspati or hydrogenated vegetable fat.
  • Real filter coffee, vanilla bean and cinnamon doing the flavouring, with no preservatives or synthetic colours.
  • It is sugar and it says so. A fudge-toffee that pretended otherwise would be the problem.
Ingredients

Sugar

First ingredient

The largest single ingredient by weight. With the other sugar sources this works out at about 67 g of sugar per 100 g.

Butter

Real dairy

Real butter, not vanaspati or hydrogenated vegetable fat. This is the main thing separating it from commercial fudge.

Sweetened condensed milk

Dairy and sugar

Gives fudge its texture. Carries its own sugar, which is why sugar appears more than once in the list.

Liquid glucose

Refined syrup

A second sugar. It stops the fudge crystallising and turning grainy.

Water

In the boil

Used while cooking the fudge down.

Gum arabic

Additive (INS 414)

A plant gum used as a stabiliser. Permitted and benign, but it is still an additive.

Sunflower lecithin

Additive (INS 322)

An emulsifier, from sunflower rather than soy. Permitted by FSSAI in general foods.

Natural flavour

Flavouring

The one item in the list without a named source.

Jaggery

Unrefined sugar

A third sugar source.

Filter coffee instant powder

Real coffee

Real coffee doing the flavouring, rather than a coffee essence.

Vanilla bean

Real vanilla

Whole vanilla bean rather than synthetic vanillin.

Tuticorin sea salt

Named origin

Sea salt from Tuticorin. Sodium stays low at about 33 mg per 100 g.

Cinnamon

Whole spice

Real spice rather than a flavouring.
